Mad Honey: A GMA Book Club Pick: A Novel

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business.

Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . .

Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

Book discussion questions are at the end of my review. Book club for November picked Mad Honey, so this is my first Jodi Picoult. I enjoyed the read, and love the fact it took an unexpected turn half way through the book - i did NOT expect that! Definitely a good book for discussion... The narration changed between Olivia and Lily, which sometimes was confusing as the stories moved back and forth through time. I don't want to say much about the story beyond the book's summary, but after the big reveal at times it felt a little agenda driven but it also gives the reader empathy for Lily. https://jodipicoult.com/pdfs/Mad-... https://readinggroupguides.com/re...

Best book I've read in ages, but it speaks to me and my recent life. I made excuses for my ex, because the bad times (emotional not physical) were between the the wonderful times, and because I was "strong" like he said, and could take the bad times and still be there, dependable for him when they passed. This book hit me like a freight train. I had to take breaks and walk away, and come back, and finally couldn't put it down until I finished it. "Part of it was because I bought into the gaslighting, the constant barrage of abuse. Part of it was because I was bewildered and embarrassed that I had reached this point - as if I could no longer mark the spot where I stopped being an intelligent, confident woman. And part of it was because, in spite of everything, I loved him more than I had ever loved anyone else - and I thought that meant that I might be able to change him." And there is a twist in this book that fits it perfectly, not like some cheap trick played on the reader.
The only bad part - I had the ending figured out by page 75.

Really good book. Love that it was co-authored (I had no idea). Also, I really enjoyed the plot twist. It was further followed by fascinating and thoughtful explanations that I learned something. “Left handed and right handed” was a great analogy.
